How Many Slats Does a Venetian Blind Need? A Worked Example
A venetian or faux-wood blind is really a stack of individual slats hung from ladder tapes, and the number of slats it takes to fill a given drop isn’t arbitrary — it falls straight out of three numbers: the drop, the slat width, and how much each slat overlaps the one below it. Understanding that arithmetic is genuinely useful, whether you’re ordering replacement slats for a damaged blind, comparing slat widths before you buy, or just curious why a 50 mm blind looks so much chunkier than a 25 mm one on the same window. The core idea: pitch, not slat width, sets the count
It’s tempting to assume slat count is simply the drop divided by the slat width, but that’s not quite right, because neighbouring slats overlap slightly rather than sitting edge to edge. If they didn’t overlap, closed slats would leave a thin line of light between each one. The calculator handles this with a value called the pitch — the slat width reduced by an overlap percentage, defaulting to ten percent — and it’s the pitch, not the raw slat width, that the drop is actually divided by. A 25 mm slat with a ten-percent overlap has a pitch of 22.5 mm; a 50 mm slat at the same overlap has a pitch of 45 mm.
Worked example: a 48-inch drop in two common slat widths
Take a blind with a 48 in drop. Fitted with common 2 in faux-wood slats, the calculator returns a pitch of 1.8 in and a slat count of 27, with a raised stack roughly 1.08 in tall using the tool’s default slat thickness for that unit. Fit the same 48 in drop with narrower 1 in slats instead, and the pitch drops to 0.9 in, doubling the slat count to 54 — and doubling the stack height too, to roughly 2.16 in, since twice as many slats are now piled on top of each other when the blind is raised. That’s the core trade-off in one comparison: narrower slats give a finer, more detailed look and let you angle light more precisely, but they need roughly twice as many pieces and stack noticeably taller when fully raised, which matters if you need the raised blind to clear a shallow window above a door.
Worked example: the same drop in metric
The relationship holds in metric too. A 1200 mm drop with standard 25 mm slats returns a pitch of 22.5 mm and a slat count of 54. Switch to wider 50 mm slats on the same 1200 mm drop and the pitch doubles to 45 mm, halving the count to 27 — the same doubling-and-halving pattern as the imperial example above, just at different absolute numbers. This consistency is exactly why the underlying pitch calculation, not a look-up table for each slat size, is what the calculator actually runs: the relationship between slat width and count is the same shape regardless of which unit or which specific width you plug in.
How much overlap actually changes the count
The ten-percent default overlap is a sensible general-purpose figure, but it isn’t fixed, and it’s worth seeing how much it moves the result. On a 1500 mm drop with 25 mm slats, the default ten-percent overlap gives a pitch of 22.5 mm and a count of 67. Drop the overlap to a lighter five percent and the pitch widens slightly to 23.75 mm, bringing the count down to 64 — fewer slats, but also a slightly less light-tight closure when the slats tilt shut. Push the overlap up to a heavier twenty percent instead, and the pitch narrows to 20 mm, pushing the count up to 75 — more slats and a noticeably more solid, overlapping closure, at the cost of a taller raised stack. Heavier overlap trades slat count and stack height for a more light-blocking closed position; lighter overlap trades the reverse.
Why manufacturers don’t all use the same overlap
The calculator’s ten-percent default is a reasonable middle-of-the-road figure, but different manufacturers genuinely use different ladder-tape overlaps for the same nominal slat width, which is one reason two “25 mm” blinds from two different brands can hold a slightly different number of slats over an identical drop. If a product listing states its own ladder pitch or overlap percentage, use that figure in the overlap field instead of the default for the closest possible match to the actual product; if it doesn’t, the default remains a solid general-purpose estimate for planning and comparison purposes, even if a specific manufacturer’s real hardware lands a slat or two away from it in either direction.
What the raised stack height actually tells you
The stack height figure — roughly the slat count multiplied by the thickness of a single slat — matters most when a raised blind has to clear something above the window: a transom, a shallow header, or a door frame close to the top of a tall window. A thicker faux-wood slat stacks taller for the same count than a thin aluminium one; running the earlier 60 in drop with 2 in slats through the calculator using a slightly thinner 0.06 in slat thickness (rather than the tool’s aluminium-leaning default) still returns the same slat count of 34, but a stack height of roughly 2.04 in instead of a taller figure a thicker slat would give — a small but real difference if the space above your window is genuinely tight.
Ordering replacement slats without guessing
If you’re replacing one or two damaged slats rather than a whole blind, the slat count tells you roughly where in the stack a given slat sits, but the more useful number is simply confirming the total so you don’t under- or over-order. Measure your blind’s drop and slat width, run it through the calculator, and compare the result against how many slats you can actually count on the blind in front of you — a mismatch usually means the ladder tape has stretched slightly over the years, which is worth knowing before you order parts for a repair. Why the count matters even if you never plan to count slats yourself
Most people will never sit down and count the slats on their own blind, and that’s fine — the number matters less for its own sake than for what it tells you about cost and durability. Every slat is a joint: a point where a ladder tape rung meets a tilting piece of material, and a point that can eventually wear, sag, or need replacing. A blind with 54 narrow slats has roughly twice as many of those joints as the same drop fitted with 27 wide ones, which is part of why very narrow-slat blinds sometimes carry a small price premium over wider alternatives of the same overall size — more individual pieces to cut, drill, and thread onto the ladder tape during manufacture. None of this makes narrow slats a worse choice; it simply means the slat count is a genuinely useful proxy for how much manufacturing complexity, and how many potential wear points, sit inside a given blind.
Checking your own blind against the calculator
If you want to sanity-check a blind you already own, measure its drop and slat width as precisely as you can, run both through the calculator, and then physically count the slats on the blind itself. A close match confirms the ladder tape is still at its original spacing; a noticeable mismatch — especially a lower real count than the calculator predicts — often means the tape has stretched slightly with age and use, which is worth knowing before you buy replacement slats sized for the original spec rather than the blind’s current, slightly looser one. This is also a useful check before ordering a matching second blind for an identical window elsewhere in the house: confirm the existing blind’s real slat count and width first, rather than assuming the product spec sheet from years ago still describes exactly what’s hanging on your wall today.
Choosing a slat width isn’t only about the count
None of this means fewer or more slats is inherently better — the right width depends on the look and function you want, not on minimising a number. Wider slats give a bolder, more graphic look and a clearer view through when tilted open, with fewer moving parts to eventually wear out. Narrower slats give a finer, more traditional look and marginally more precise light control, at the cost of roughly double the moving parts for the same drop.
